Albert Einstein wrote:
A human being is part of a whole…he experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest…This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.
Even when we know, we are part of something bigger than ourselves and don’t always act upon that knowledge. When we don’t realize there is something bigger than ourselves, more important than ourselves, we are disconnected and struggle to see the joy in the simple things around us. We fail to perform simple acts of kindness because we are isolated and blind to the golden opportunities at an arm’s length.
The moments of joy and beauty over the past three-plus months have been in seeing people join together to help and heal. Whether it was the parade of cars driving past our facilities honking and holding up signs of gratitude for the staff, sharing of food with others, marching to end racism in America, it is the belief that we are a part of something bigger and we are better for it.
