Orchard Place, mental health experts for Iowa’s children, is proud to announce the results of the 6th annual Moonlight Classic bike ride held Saturday, July 15. With the help of more than 700 cyclists, 100+ volunteers and dozens of corporate sponsors, Orchard Place raised a record $105,000 to fund Orchard Place services for children with emotional and behavioral challenges.
In addition to sponsoring the event, Sammons Financial Group took home the Moonlight Cup for registering the biggest team, -- 145 cyclists -- for the event.
The 13-mile evening ride has become a summer hit with cyclists, with many repeat bikers. Contests including costume, bike and helmet lighting competitions kicked off the event that began and ended at the Iowa Taproom.
“It was as close to a perfect ride as we could get. The weather, pre-ride and post ride celebrations and outstanding sponsors made for a fantastic Moonlight Classic,” said Nancy Bobo, Vice President of Development at Orchard Place. “Our riders, sponsors and volunteers take pride in this event and our cause of helping Iowa kids with mental and behavioral health challenges.”
To date, the Orchard Place Moonlight Classic has raised more than $500,000 for services targeting Iowa kids. Funds from this year’s ride are earmarked for Orchard Place Summer School for all 88 children residing at the Orchard Place Campus.
Orchard Place is the oldest locally-based charity in Des Moines providing mental health treatment and expertise for Iowa’s kids. Our inpatient, outpatient and community programs serve 10,000 children from birth to age 22 annually. Four operating divisions work under the Orchard Place umbrella of services: Child Guidance Center, Orchard Place Campus, PACE Juvenile Center and the Integrated Health Program.
